sry about double post, seems the delete button doesn't work, just sends you back to homepage

The assumption is, that most wallpapers on wallbase were good and should be here as well. It's not just about saving a handful of the very high quality wallpapers but also about offering the same diversity we loved about wallbase. And for that we're gonna need at least a sizable chunk of what wallbase had to offer.

But we (i.e. developers, mods) can't just sit down and quickly skim through one and a half million wallpapers and pic out the better half or so. That'd take years.

What we can do is import everything and then trust in the community to help point out the trash. We'll make it easy to report low quality / trashy wallpapers (if it's not just about personal taste) and in the long run should be able to manage quality uploads and tags quite well.

Couldn't have said it better myself Gandalf!

When should we expect beta to roll out? Approximately...

koalafishy Nice example! The website tagline is a clear example of violation of rules (wallbase, if I remember them correctly) and (without the site text) would be perfect example of "my spam (whee, cheezy) is somebody else's ham (wheeee Danieeeeel Raaaaadcliff how luvely)" :-)

koalafishy: when I started scraping WB's images back in Dec there were ~1.89m in total. The marked for deletion mess made a lot disappear, but Neem/Cosmeen took over the job and still got most of them. After images under our resolution threshold and the lowest-quality ones are removed, we should have well over a million even before new uploads.

Bukssna: done when it's done! Progress is slowish but pretty constant.

Re: importing WB's image archive: Gandalf pretty much said it all, but we briefly considered just pooling our own collections to start off WH. It would mean less variety and would take ages to go through anyway, so we just decided to scrape WB. Just remember that it's a diverse community and we don't want to alienate folks (even the weird ones).

hhman: we plan to have user-specified tag blacklists to serve the purpose the car/women filter WB v4 had.

  • 210

cfunk: just out of curiosity, how many GB of pics are we talking about?

  • 211

hhman: I'd have to check to be sure, but around 800GB.

  • 212

Great job on this site everyone! Looks very sleek.

  • 213

could you make it so when you click a pic it comes up in a new window to stop the endless auto scrolldown that happends after you click back?

  • 215

fatality1 There is an option for that in the settings. Settings > browsing > Open thumbs in... a new window

To favorite a wallpaper, you just click the star icon in the menu on the left, check under "Tools".

  • 216

thx. also how do you upload your own pics?

  • 217

Fatality: Have you ever actually looked at the startpage or the main menu?

  • 218

I suggest forcing the uploader to add at least one tag to make it easier for searching. Most content is not tagged :/

  • 219

Kod, That should become a thing once we have an improved uploader ready and up. As of now, the tags field doesn't even work on the uploader :/

  • 220

Kod: I think we missed it in the rules, but the plan is to have minimum 1, maybe 2 tags required for each image. As you can see with some of the walls and the messy tags, though, we're not really enforcing anything because we'll be starting fresh.

  • 221

I don't think that will have much of an effect, considering that if a person is not interested enough to tag his pictures without being forced to, when forced will probably just randomly add some tags.

  • 222

GamingFTW: It worked for Wallbase, so why shouldn't it work now? If it has no tags it won't be found at all, those 1 or 2 "shitty" tags may help it getting found.

  • 223

To be honest, while ideally uploaders should know enough about what they're uploading to be able add a few tags to each wall, I don't think it would be the end of the world if they fail to do that. I'm thinking we'll have a good few users who will be willing to pickup the slack and fix whatever they can. Also the untagged search that we have should help a ton with that.

  • 224

Hi everyone. I think that there should be an easier way to tag photos. It will be much easier to tag more photos at once. I have uploaded many photos one by one and tagging every single would be difficult. :/ Also there should be a way to upload more pictures at once.

  • 225

I'm new to uploading. I tried to include few tag names in "Tags" bar before clicking "Create Wallpaper", but then it just uploads the image without any of my listed tags? Why is that?

  • 226

Also, what is the proper way of adding multiple tags? I simply wrote them all one after another leaving no comma, just space between them, like this: "background texture pattern"

Should I have wrote: "#background, texture, pattern"?

    Lerx, jonivaio

Uploading currently sucks. The tags field currently is only there as a placeholder (it won't work). Once we get around to working on the upload system, we will allow multiple wallpapers to be uploaded at once, as well as bulk tag adding at upload.
