Will the new site have filter options such as the "at least" size function?...right now it seems too specific.
Keep up the good work. I miss wallbase soooo much. :)

hi all, i used to be on wallbase
it used to have a feature where on the browsing screen you could 'drag' to the top of the window and you could put wall papers into favorite folers etc - will wallhaven have this feature?
also any news on when wallhaven will go live? its looking geat so far!
no tiny wallpapers/images it's already obsolete with the most recent phones which have way more pixels so I see no reason to allow "tiny wallpapers"
one thing that always bugged me in wallbase was the fact that a single wallpaper and all its size variants could end up clogging search results somehow
actually, i had a thought, is there any possible way of, say, lets say you have the same image, but at varying resolutions (I.E: 1680x1050, 1920x1080, 5040x1080 ect ect), was thinking, what if a search gives the one image, but you open that image in a new tab, window or just open it, it could then have the varying sizes down the side bar just under tools and then the results the search returns could be condensed, its just an idea i had floating in my head, so dont know if it makes much sense.
can't see/click on "source"
When you use the random wallpaper function the same image can appear multiple times. Seeing a repeated image doesn't add any value to the process and is a waste of a tile. Is it possible to change the random function to only display an image once? On a related note how does wallhaven intend on dealing with duplicate images?
whismerhill, drgrumbles We're still thinking about how best to do this. Personally I'd prefer something along the lines what drgrumbles described but it'll be complicated to get this to work properly with resolution based search etc.
whismerhill the sources thing isn't quite ready yet. I believe there will be some new stuff in the next update, not sure though ;D
Squidgy That mostly happenes because there aren't that many wallpapers here yet. When we start getting serious there will be a lot more and duplicates in random search will be close to zero.
Thanks for the response. It's good to hear that Wallhaven has a plan to deal with duplicates.
I'm not sure you picked up on the second issue I also addressed which was the random search function displaying a tile for the same image multiple times. By this I mean exactly the same image, linking to the same url of the same image. On one hand this is an actual 'random' function but it pays no regard to the repetition of images. Even if were loading random images there's no value in seeing an image twice and I feel that it's a waste of a tile. I feel as if it would be more meaningful to the process to shuffle the images instead. I would like to hear Wallhaven's opinion on the matter.
Yeah, that's what I meant. Basically whenever you load a new page in random search (which happens automatically by scrolling down, you can see the page numbers to the left) it will select a few random wallpapers from all available ones for that page. Since there aren't that many wallpapers yet, some may appear again on a following page. However once we add the humongous amount of wallpapers from wallbase this will become a very rare occurance.
There's not really an efficient way to prevent this. We could of course technically create a shuffled list of all available wallpapers (which I think is what you are suggesting). However we'd have to do that for each individual random search (since you'd expect a new search to yield new results), which will be quite a lot of work for the server. Consider that shuffling a list with over a million entries is not exactly a cheap operation, even if we manage to optimize the process.
An easier way of doing it might be to maintain a list of wallpapers you have already seen during this particular search but quite frankly that'd still be a lot of work for very little positive outcome.
I think as far as query and server load, you should not have a true random query against the database. I would generate a single "random" ordered list of all images once per day using cron. This will be the random list that people will see when choosing random. They can still filter against it but removes the "duplicate" image issue and takes out some of the issues typically caused by so-called "random" queries.
Heck you could even go as far as having a handful of different randomly ordered list that when they choose random, it picks one and uses that list. But some variation of this would be acceptable I think.
Here are the main changes coming next alpha update for those wondering:
The forum is still a priority so we can all communicate better and sticky important details.
*Yep, we're actually gonna start moderating.
zippzap I've thought about something similar, but one of the things I always did at wallbase was just check the random section. Having only one "random" page per day would be utter crap. Not so random if it's the same for everyone and lasts all day. Having a sort of list of random pages is better, but again we could run into the same issue of someone hitting random so many times that they get repeats. Again, not too random.
As Gandalf mentioned, we only have about 4300 wallpapers. Odds of getting repeats currently is very high. We do have about 1.6ish million wallpapers from wallbase that will make their way back into the system sooner or later. Once we have all that content, random pages will look much more random.
One other thing to note about this (take it as you will): wallbase also had this repeating issue. If you did a ton of tagging, you may have seen it (getting jumped up the page to a thumb you must have passed already).
Perhaps I didn't really explain myself. I don't mean simply one random page with 50 results, I'm talking about a complete randomly generated ordered list of ALL images. This way, as your scroll down 500 pages, you never see any duplicates.
Seeing the same images on Wallbase in random was frustrating. As a programmer and database guy, I kicked around the idea of making a wallbase alternative when it stopped being updated, so I am glad to see this site actually happening.
The idea I had was that if you click on random, it just takes you to the page you were last on while scrolling down. It's still a 100% randomly ordered list, but better than wall base because you would never have duplicates scrolling through and you could come back later and start on page 100 and keep going if you wanted too. Not seeing what you already saw earlier when you looked at the random list.
I hope that makes sense.
As a new user to the site, I am a little confused on the button selections. I can choose Porn and SFW, that seems almost contrary to each other. I admit, Wallbase's implementation wasn't exactly clear.
I think I understand what your trying to do, but perhaps this could be rethought. I realize your also wanting to make it much like Wallbase, but taking it a step further would be better in my opinion.
It think your wanting to say, okay... there is Porn that is "Sketchy" and "NSFW" and even as part of image sets, Porn that is "SFW". You want to group all of that content together, separate from Anime and Everything Else (aka General).
But, where the confusion is going to be is an image of a female that is fully clothed, isn't part of a porn image set, where does it go? General or Porn?
To me, without spending a lot of thought, I would say that Porn should only have Sketchy and NSWF options.
Anime on the other hand, is different because it's like a subcategory to General, and it has all three types. Porn isn't really subcategory, its a legal/moral classification/tag.
You can have a wallpaper that says "FUCK YOU ALL" and that isn't porn but would fit into the category of NSFW. But if you have a taken woman, it is also NSFW, but is also porn.
Now that I talk it out... I think that porn would almost be a tag from a programming perspective to where it would be negated if not enabled. I don't know how how you structured your backend so I'm really probably not making any sense.
Blah. Sorry. :)
zippzap The "Porn" Category is gonna be renamed to something like "People". It is absolutely not intended to stay that way. The purpose of these three 'big' categories is to provide a method for some quick, very rough filtering.
@dragonfae9 The Search interface will get a major overhaul before we're finished and take all that into account.
Good idea change the "Porn"Category by people why not put others Categories like Animals , games and nature for that people can quick access in the wallpaper categories that prefer
Redline: as Gandalf said, the content categories are broad strokes, so that people can immediately filter anime or people (i.e., porn). Pretty much everything else will be covered by tag categories. This way, you could for example search for nature in General and SFW to get landscape shots without nekkid ladies in them.
It's a little more complicated than we'd like and isn't fully in place yet, but it's a headache designing a system to manage diverse content for a diverse user base. We'll see how things like this work out once we're really up and running.
How about being able to filter for a specific resolution and the above ones as well ? eg UI feature : in the dropdown of resolutions, a click selects a resolution, a second click prepends a ">" to the picked resolution's label and a third click unselects it. Also it would be nice if the selected resolutions appeared as the select label (instead of "resolution").
Suggestion, I noticed when resizing the window everything scales but the logo, perhaps use an image font or similar to scale this also? The logo on the homepage, not the small one in the nav.
for Wallbase?
Will there be an option in the Settings > Avatar section to crop an image manually? I know it's not a big feature, but it's kinda nice.
Necro Not likely. It's way to much effort for something you can do with any graphics editing program, including ms paint. For now, at least, we got way more pressing features to implement.
Completely understandable.
could you make it possible to upload many pictures at once?
