I have a question:
If a Game/Movie/Anime/something uses AI and someone posts a screenshot of that...
Is it AI or not ?
We're talking things that are at least 95% AI generated.

I'm surprised. I thought the ability to toggle AI art on and off was a great solution.
I suspect there will be other sites that do not restrict AI Art who will eventually be much more pupular because of it. And wallhaven will eventually either buckle to the pressure or dissappear.
But, it ain't my site, so it ain't my call.
It's too bad we can't let the best stuff in. Like maybe we have a separate site for AI walls (wallhades) and the top 1% gets posted on here.
Secure the border and only let in the cream-of-the-crop.

Every image is likely to be touched with AI in the future, so yes of course it is allowed. It's just images that are generated 100% by AI that are on the chopping block, but is 90% AI ok? 80% AI? 50%? or only 25% AI... that is the fine line we will live with for the rests of our lives.
It's cool to test the limits of rules but the fact is that even if you inpainted an image you wouldn't be able to tell me what % was touched up. It's always going to come down to a judgement call. A few pixels edited would fly, but significant alteration, that might not - there's going to be subjectivity to what constitutes alteration. You made a lot of points in this thread and I want to throw some back.
As for AI being another "tool", a tool isn't something you tell to do the work for you. AI is as much as tool as employees are "tools". You can tell them to do something and they will do it, but they are separate entities and they're responsible for the output. AI isn't a tool, it's a machine capable of great output, but it is making the result - not the prompter. It's easier to wrap your head around it if you imagine a group of interns being on the other end of a prompt box. You can work with it for the end result but that's a working relationship. If you have to instruct anything, that puts you in a managerial role - not the role of a creator.
"Steve, make me a sandwhich, masterpiece, subway_lora_v_0_1, pickles. Damn I am good at making sandwiches" It's just nonsense. With AI everyone loses. The audience, the prompters, and people who practice a real craft. The audience loses because they're robbed of the ability to engage with human expression. The prompters lose because they're taking credit for an AI's work (AI rights might come quicker than we think if the rate of progress is as exponential as people say). Artists lose for obvious reasons - their field is oversaturated with machine-made products and people are less and less sure what's human. Art connects us to other humans, consciously and subconsciously. Even if you like something made by AI, somewhere you know there was little to no human experience driving it. You can never think to yourself "I wonder what drove them to paint it this way".
Love the decision btw, made an account just to say thank you. It's nice to have at least one place stand up against the great ensloppification of our world.
I'm with you, Glad you did! :)
thanks god!this is good news
I don't really understand the rationale behind wanting to ban AI art when a toggle is already in place that filters out the vast majority of AI-generated images.
If you're going to ban AI-generated images because they're low-effort "slop," then a massive cleanup of the website and its hosted content should follow. Why is porn even allowed here for example? There are already gazillions of websites hosting pornographic images, yet they're still allowed to be posted here. Not to mention that the "sketchy" filter is practically obsolete and should be removed and merged with the "NSFW" filter. Most of the content posted under it is tasteless soft porn and hentai - like, come on...
Then there are the mountains of mediocre screenshots of games and media, low-quality images, and low-effort wallpapers, which in many cases, are arguably worse than "AI slop." But all of those are allowed because they were "human-made"?
I'm not even going to go into the lacking tagging system and how little functionality it offers.
Ultimately, it's your website, and you can do whatever you want with it. However, AI being the hill you want to fight and die on is odd when there are heaps of improvements to be made that would be far more beneficial and impactful than an unnecessary ban on a certain type of image that was mostly filtered out anyway for those who didn't want to see it.

You described the whole problem but did not name it:
People SUCK at tagging their own uploads.
NSFW is not bad, sketchy is not bad, Anime or Hentai is not bad... AI is not bad.
It's when a picture is uploaded with the incorrect tags. This should be the focus of the attention. If i upload a image with clear nudity and mark it as "Nature" and sketchy... i should receive a penalty or warning. Too many of those, and i would be banned from uploading for a while. Persist, and banned from uploading for ever.
Also, while we're at it with the GENERAL/ANIME/PEOPLE , the SFW/SKETCHY/NSFW, and the AI/NON-AI, maybe we should add another one named Screenshots. I find that they pollute the website in a worse way than AI.
If AI is Enshitification, Screenshots are the Enlazyfication.
Honestly,
We could talk for weeks about this and even if we all came to a consensus and agreed on everything (which won't happen), if the site owner wants to take the site in a direction other than what the consensus says, then it is what it is. Our choice is to stay or leave and since whether we stay or leave is of no concern to this website owner since no money is generated from it, then at this point even discussing it all is mute and probably just contributing to owner rage over all the drama.
Sorry if I've contributed to this mess, and now I'll just shut my trap.
YES!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU
Excellent announcement, thank you!
Created an account just to say thank you very much for this!!!!
To everyone saying "just keep a toggle" the ban is the point. AI art steals from real artists. Generative AI is bad for the environment. AI was supposed to do our jobs so we could all create art and do recreation. Now AI is making "art" while we are all stuck with crappy jobs.
Other sites that allow AI art are completely overwhelmed with tons of incredibly low quality garbage because of it. Look at Pinterest, which is basically unusable these days. Banning it is a great decision
Good riddance.

Oh absolutely... not trying to nudge things in any direction, just healthy discussion. I fully understand that this is NOT a democracy :)

Low quality is also in Wallhaven, with or without AI. It's just how it is... people find that a screenshot from <insert game name> is nice, and upload it...

What art have you created?
what would this mean for ai assisted art, by that i mean art that was made by a human with some small adjustments from ai?
