Self hosting

Can anyone recommend a (preferably open source) way to self host a site similar to wallhaven on a small scale? Tagging is really the killer feature I'd like to emulate, but privately for a small group of friends.

I have heard of Danbooru (the source code, not the website itself) and Hydrus

Do you mean something like immich?

Danbooru looks like it will be a good fit, thanks!

I had thought of immich, but I believe that uses AI to tag the images, which isn't really what I'm after. In this case I'd prefer to do the tagging manually

Immich doesn't use AI to tag images. It has optional face recognition and text recognition (OCR) features, which use local machine learning. The face recognition is quite useful IMHO, but if you don't need it you can simply disable it. Tagging as on wallhaven exists via a separate feature.

TBF, Immich does have some other AI stuff for indexing. My install let's me search for pretty generic stuff like "food" or "keyboard" or "concert" (I do go outside...). https://docs.immich.app/features/searching/ Works pretty well for what it does with my images at least.

But yeah, as far as I know, no manual tagging.
