That's a good point, but I think it would be enough if only a few people seed it. If this idea ever materializes, I would be happy to seed it myself too.

If the files would be hosted on the wallhaven servers, or some external cloud storage like Google Drive, then you're absolutely right -- that would slow down the servers and cost a lot.
What I'm proposing, though, is for the site owners to compress all the wallpapers onto a zip file (or another format), and then provide that as a torrent. That way, all the uploading and file transferring is offloaded to the users. They would still have to initially upload the files though -- long enough that the users have the entire file, and after that, the users can just be the ones uploading/seeding the file.
I think that's the gist of how torrents work, but correct me if I'm wrong.
