I agree with Gandalf complex is not better, keeping things simple will lead to the best results. Just keep in mind that as you go through wallhaven and see you awesome walls that you DL and you see that a tag could make it better or a tag that doesnt belong do your part and either add or subtract to make searching easier.

However super complex tags that get super defined but are still either general or obscure might not be the best tags to put on something. Just think about what you would search for, if it is something you tend to search for a lot then use your head.

EX. a picture of Optimus Prime standing on the moon.... common sense would say add tags like Transformers, movies, cars, robots, moon, space

however tags such as rocks, black, stars, windshields, wheels...etc might not get the results people searching for those tags are looking for even though they might show up in the picture.

Most of the time more tags do not equal more successful hits. Sometimes all you need is Tranformers, Optimus Prime, Moon, Space, Sci-fi, cars, movies... that about as good as it gets and if you can't find the Optimus Prime wall with those tags then maybe searching for walls is not your strong suit.

Also with transformers you should know if the picture is of the TV show or the movie and use the correct distinction to make. Pictures of the TV should maybe not go under the tag movies as well. Seeing as how the picture will be very very different. But both should be under transformers and Optimus Prime of course.

It's nice to have the options of course but in my opinion it may be better if the default stays at SFW. Also like wallbase.cc it may be best to safe the NSFW for users who have verified their age through a profile.

It would be nice to just put 1920x1080+ in the view filters and it will still show 2560x1440 and 3840x2160 or any other 16:9 ratio that is bigger.

For me personally I have a lot of content saved up for when this site goes from Alpha to Beta that is 2560x1440 and 3840x2160. I have zero 1920x1080 content and that is still a very popular resolution. Many might not ever see that content if they don't add those two higher resolutions to there view filters and this content is easily resized to 1080p if they wanted.

I think that 3 fields of separation is great. However I would turn anime into ART or something that would encompass more than just one type of animation. just to ease the burden of general. So you would have in fact three very distinct separations. General, Art and People seeing as how people and Art are very heavy. it would also help keep people from just throwing around the anime tag on all any art stuff.

    Just my opinion.

  • 692

I think it should be mandatory to have atleast 1 or 2 tags on a wallpaper before uploading

  • 693

Angelo343 That might actually be a really good idea. o.o

Brokenvegetable Turning the 'Anime' category into 'Art' would make a lot of people very angry, namely everybody how has it disabled. :D There is a very significant amount of anime wallpapers here, but also a lot of people who don't like them. Those people will still want to see regular 'Art' wallpapers (which is pretty much everything else). Once again, it's not about the "is anime art" discussion but about practical use for filtering.

Mavanis Better search options are planned, see under development.

I've a few posts and I'm thinking in only starting with more posts when the alpha phase finish... People, what do you think?

  • 697

Great work you guys have done here. Can't wait for more updates!

I also look forward to the potential implementation of a minimum tag requirement for new uploads. Very many of the wallpapers I come across are either tag-free or incompletely tagged (e. g. tagging a picture of a model with just her name instead of, say, "women" or "girls").

I realise this problem sits mainly with the uploaders and their laziness, but I think a rule of 2 or so tags per each new upload would work to combat that. Incomplete tagging not only prevents people from finding wallpapers, but also hinders the blacklist feature....

  • 698

I would wait until beta to post walls seeing as how doubles are showing up more and more. soon we will have nothing but double walls. Plus with everyone uploading 20 walls at a time I am sure we will hit 100k soon even if half of them are doubles. I have stopped uploading as I don't want to contribute to the doubles problem at the moment.

I am all for the 2 tag limit to upload a wall. I think that will go a long way to help get walls correctly tagged and also allow for easier searching.

This way people can't just be lazy anymore. I try not to be but at times I blank on what to tag something. However I know I could come up with at least two tags for every wall I have put up.

  • 700

I think at least two tags is necessary. Just like 'actress name tag' for sub-tag and 'women' or 'actress' for super-tag. Or 'Wolverine' as "small" tag and 'comics' as "big" tag so user adds to his blacklist only 'comics' tag and see no more sub-tags which is covered by 'comics' super-tag. Might be useful for filtering.

  • 702

I like to have some order in my collection, so I copy the tag (i.e. the Name of the actress) and name the file after it. It would be so much easier if the file has an accurate name. i.e. Instead of wallhaven-5207.jpg it could be Devon-Jade-5207-wallhaven.jpg

Maybe move wallpapers with no tags into a separate category, the uploader maybe doesn't know anything about it, but there are people who may. Would be a waste to throw wallpapers away like that imo. I know I have some stuff that I wouldn't be able to tag correctly even if I were to use google image search, so even If I added the minimum 2 tags with general terms like "buildings, streets" for example, it would be thrown into the massive pool of wallpapers and nobody would ever give it the attention that it would get if it was in a separate category for tag fixing.

  • 704

This is a good discussion. We may have to do some testing if people are still comfortable with a minimum tags limit in place.

The main concern with a the requirement is what kwazap pointed out, that some people may decide not to upload their wallpapers at all because of it.

Another problem I can think of is the increase of useless/wrong tags, that is very likely to follow. People may start creating their own versions of #gottaTagThisLater in order to circumvent this limit. Even if everybody used the same tag for this purpose (I think there was one like that on wallbase, like #tagPlz or something) it would be no more useful than the Untagged Wallpapers page that we already have.

I've also been thinking about the option to only enforce a minimum tag limit on individual users after they've been know to repeatedly upload untagged wallpapers. However that might come across as a sort of punishment, which it really shouldn't be. Also it probably would still pose the problems I mentioned above.

  • 706

Will you be using the same image naming convention from Wallbase (at least for images acquired from Wallbase)?

This would go a long way towards eliminating duplicates in local image collections?

  • 707

`How to remove my images? Can you please delete my images.I will upload other stuff.

  • 708

As soon as the beta begins I will in my own rights become a "TAGGING BATAD" as I will take the time to go through as many walls as I can to make sure they are tagged with at least a few tags. I have no problem watching every wall that comes up, I just have not been tagging since the new update cause I find the need for it would be wasted right now with all the doubles and just the shear amount of flooded walls at the moment. But once it starts for real I will be taking a lot of time to perfect my tagging skills and report/delete wall flagging to make sure everything stays within the rules and regulations :) I am ready to do my part.

  • 709

Brokenvegetable I would do it too and I think that it would be so much easier if there was some way to slideshow the wallpapers so you don't necessairly have to get back to the page with every single wallpapers.

the slideshow would have the necessairy infos (uploader, views, favs, tags, add to fav and some other) and just with the tap of the arrow keys or a button on the window change to the next wallpaper.

At least I think it would be usefull to some people like Vegeboy (brokenvegetable) to tag lots of wallpapers in less time

lordschnarchy While a good idea initially, this sadly creates issues for users who regularly download wallpapers and doesn't remember each and every wallpaper they've ever downloaded.

Konachan (an anime focused image site) have a setup as you described. When I went through my download folder I had over 10 duplicates in some cases, all because a single tag was added or another was removed.

The format of Wallbase and WallHaven isn't perfect, but it's better than tag equaling the file name. A somewhat acceptable middle ground would be to embed the tags in the metadata of the image upon saving. Most image formats supports tags, though the question is whether or not all operating systems does.

    Google Chrome version 37.0.2062.120 m (64-bit)

When you resize the browser window smaller then larger again the main menu links (LATEST RANDOM UPLOAD COMMENTS) isn't restored to its previous position to the right of the logo. This causes issue with the search bar being smaller as well.

    Screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/yuIqJcm.jpg

Issue happens in Chrome, both in normal mode (with addons) and incognito/private mode (w/o addons). Issue is not reproducible with Firefox or Internet Explorer.

I just realized that the main menu links could quite possibly be a humorous read for OCR users: "Latest random upload comments"

Feature Request #1: You devs probably have a list of features you will / want to implement, will consider, have considered and decided against. Have it linked in the FAQ in order to cut down with repeated Feature Requests :-). Not a copy either, the real stuff, whatever bad format it is in - so you won't have to put time into updating it. Possibly keep a separate "secret" list if you need. Or flesh out the Under development page which currently really is only a big overview and link it in the Faq.

Feature Request #2: in wallpaper browsing mode show a possibly optional date separator of some kind (Day o calendar week). So when browsing from "now" to "old" we can say, hey, that's last week, I definitively already checked these.

    Nice work guys!

Angelo343 I think adding a slide show would be asking a lot at the moment for the site as that would seem to be a huge undertaking IMO. But it would help out in tagging. But I am happy just going through wall by wall and tagging. I am currently using Gandalf 's untagged link to tag walls. Even though I tag the same wall like a hundred times :)

hhman I do like your idea of separating walls by date in the recent ascending or descending filter so you know at what date you stopped because at the moment I have to remember what the last wall was that I saw, sometimes that does not always works especially with the recent FLOOD of walls to the site.
