Assuming you are referring to the HTTP status code, it's a generic error that means the server has experienced an error internally.

In the context of wallhaven, the api documentation does not list 500 as a possible status code, so it's likely that wallhaven (or possibly cloudflare) is temporarily acting up.

However if you're still getting the error now, it could be possible you're sending wallhaven a request that it can't handle. If you post the code you are using to send the request, I could possibly have a look at it to see if something is off, but I am not an expert on the api and don't know everything about it. Just make sure to not post your api key.
