What's up with the wrong way mergers?

Reported repost gets cleared, then the offender gets the original merged into it? Why are the moderator going out of their way here.

Not the first time the newer reupload gets priority over the original post when they're of identical quality.

We tend to try and keep the best quality picture, regardless of size. The closest one to the original as well. In this case, the one we kept was the larger file to improve quality.
