Hi I'm new to this site, so I don't know if this is already a thing, but I searched the forum and didn't see anything similar: is it possible to have some tags imply and automatically add others? For example, if an image has the tag "Luke Skywalker", it could automatically add "Star Wars", or "Samus Aran" would add the "Metroid" tag.
Implied tags
38796 38797 No, sorry, it does not have any automatically tagged or implied tags.
All you have to do is manually add tags that match the description of the post that you or another user uploaded.

38798 Bummer. It would be a handy feature. Say, for example, you search for all "Star Wars"-tagged wallpapers, but there are some that are only tagged with "Darth Vader"-- those would fly completely under the radar.
38837 I mean, since this is the Feature Requests section of the forum, can I request that feature? It would help a lot with tagging both retroactively and moving forward.
38839 To be honest, the more I think about implied tags, the less important they seem.
Please do not misunderstand me. I like your point of view on implied tags; for example, when you say "Luke Skywalker," it could automatically add "Star Wars." Which is useful, but consider the other tags that people will add to the post, and how a random tag will automatically appear with an irrelevant tag that does not match the post.
You know what I'm saying?
38840 I remember someone asked that same thing a while ago, apparently it won't be implemented because the current tag system implementation is already complex enough and adding auto tags would make it worse.

I'm honestly not sure I understand what you're saying. For an example: If someone posts a wallpaper full of Pokemon, but one of them is holding a lightsaber, adding the tag "lightsaber" would also add "Star Wars", as it would be relevant. I mean, each of the implied tags would need to be submitted and approved first, so nothing irrelevant should go through. Do you have an example of an implied tag that wouldn't match the post?

It doesn't seem that complex to me. On other image hosting sites like this (ex. Danbooru), tags are categorized (and even color-coded) by characters, artists, media types, etc. and they also have implied tags. Why would it make things worse here?

For what it's worth, I completely agree with you, both on the clearly prima facie worth of a (closely moderated) system of tag implications and the consternation that ensues from realizing that no matter the strength of the argument or your willingness to do the work, very little is likely to change here. It has nothing to do with the quality of your suggestion or the reasoning behind it, I assure you. Everything in life boils down to a set of tradeoffs, and one of the most defining tradeoffs at this site is that in exchange for a generally permissive, loosely-moderated and free site, the investment level from the stakeholders is otherwise pretty minimal.
I want to be clear though that I've come to be very sanguine about the matter, and knowing what I do about the economic realities of providing a site like this, I think the only acceptable attitude from us users is ultimately one of understanding and gratitude. It's all too easy to lose sight of the fact that sites like Wallhaven that are reliable, fun and not trying to exploit you in every way imaginable are exceeding rare in the present day. They're true oases in our shared digital hellscape, and surely some of that charm, innocence and enjoyability would be lost if they had to be willing to keep building out the feature sets and reacting to user feedback.
I just went through a Paradise Lost-style experience of that sort with another website I genuinely adored called Trakt.tv. As a frontend designer myself, it was the highest form of art I've ever seen online, and wrapped around a brilliant and tightly scoped service that filled a real need. For a decade my annual membership fee was some of the best money I spent each year. But that all ended a few months ago when a group of equity holders decided to try and maximize their ROI even at the cost of running off the site's founder and driving away 60% of the userbase by quadrupling the fee schedule. I know it sucks to feel unheard the way it does here sometimes, but please don't let it keep you from seeing how special this place is even with those shortcomings. Inevitably at some point this site will go dark and I know I'll be quite sad when it does.
39034 With all due respect, I agree with you, considering the site is free, is moderated to the best of their abilites, and considering my uBlock Origin running picking up nothing in regards to ads, links, or any other venereal disease running on a lot of other websites, this place is absolutely great. Every now and then, when I go down the rabbit hole, I'll add tags myself, especially if I see one is missing [and without trying to add duplicates]. Many people complain, but if they can provide a better alternative, which considering how well this site works, and not to belittle the point, but how well it works considering it's free, I'm sure it would be nothing but welcomed by this community. Of course things can be better, polished, etc, but here's a good thing we have, and we should appreciate it for what it is.
